The Harbor VR

A successful marketing plan relies heavily on the pulling-power of advertising copy. Writing result-oriented ad copy is difficult, as it must convince consumers.

This VR experience will put our user in the position of an apprentice harbormaster. While being trained on the night shift by an old harbormaster who has seen the slow decay of his environment, the two are confronted with the resilience and power of an ocean that is dying.

This experience is multisensory, adding motion, scent, and air haptics to the basic VR pipeline. We have built a special mechanism that will sit underneath a Kayak. This kayak is then rocked back and forth by a docent for the experience. At certain key parts of the experience, an air mover will be switched on, simulating wind, and a special perfume will be sprayed into that air to wash over the user. Additionally, the sounds of the sea will be felt throughout the body using a SubPac.

Kayak Mount:

The Kayak mount was made by hand. First, ideas on how to make a rocking chair-like apparatus were sketched out. Eventually, the following design was chosen:

Next, proper wood length and thickness was determined. After the wood was ready, both pieces were drilled together so that they could be sanded at the same time.

Finally, the screws were removed, small notches were cut out relative to the contour of the kayak, and blackpipe was used to provide stability.
